In Moliere’s original text of Tartuffe, Flipote, a silent maidservant, is called a “slut” and then promptly exits the play, not to be seen again. Prior to rehearsals beginning for the University of Alberta’s Studio Theatre’s production of Tartuffe, Kate Weiss approached me and asked me if I would be willing to join her in the unique opportunity of creating a new story for Flipote. With Sable B. Boltz, who played another servant clown Laurent, we devised completely original sections of the play we called ‘interludes’ and acted as bite-size clown turns. Additionally, we created stage business, or Lazzi, that supported the speaking characters of the play. The character remained silent and operated from a clown and commedia dell’arte lens. It was a blast!
"Her physicality and comedy was unmatched....[& Flipote and Laurent] were hilarious, whether they were fighting or dancing with each other."
